چکیده

We evaluate several different overlay routing structures for supporting interactivity features in End Sysytem Multicast. Interactivity features include low-bandwidth textual chat, as well as higher-bandwidth audio conferencing and immersive audio applications. Overlays are evaluated using real interaction patterns seen in IRC, as well as real join and leave patterns from an ESM video broadcast. Results indicate that a Hybrid overlay structure, which is a combination of central server and peer-to-peer techniques, provides the smallest delay for textual messages sent through the system. Also, the Hybrid and ESM-Latency structures are best capable of supporting higher-bandwidth audio applications.

On the Inherent Cost of Atomic Broadcast and Multicast in Wide Area Networks

In this paper, we study the atomic broadcast and multicast problems, two fundamental abstractions for building fault-tolerant systems. As opposed to atomic broadcast, atomic multicast allows messages to be addressed to a subset of the processes in the system, each message possibly being multicast to a different subset. Our study focuses on wide area networks where groups of processes, i.e., pro...

Two-phase Multicast in Wormhole-Switched Bidirectional Multistage Banyan Networks

A multistage interconnection network is a suitable class of interconnection architecture for constructing large-scale multicomputers. Broadcast and multicast communication are fundamental in supporting collective communication operations such as reduction and barrier synchronization. In this paper, we propose a new multicast technique in wormhole-switched bidirectional multistage banyan network...

Reducing Multicast Redundancy and Latency in Multi-Interface Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks

In wireless mesh networks, each node can be equipped with multiple network interface cards tuned to different channels. In this paper, we study the problem of collision-free multicast in multi-interface multi-channel wireless mesh networks. The concept of interface redundancy is proposed as a new criterion for the multicast/broadcast redundancy in wireless mesh networks, and we prove that build...

Low Latency Multimedia Broadcast in Multi-Rate Wireless Meshes

In a multi-rate wireless network, a node can dynamically adjust its link transmission rate by switching between different modulation schemes. For the current IEEE802.11a/b/g standards, this rate adjustment is limited to unicast traffic only while multicast and broadcast traffic is always transmitted at the lowest possible rate. In this paper, we consider a novel type of multi-rate mesh networks...

FastCast: A Throughput- and Latency-Efficient Total Order Broadcast Protocol

Many uniform total order broadcast protocols have been designed in the last 30 years. Unfortunately, none of them achieves both optimal throughput and low latency. Indeed, protocols achieving optimal throughput rely on a ring dissemination pattern, which induces high latencies. Protocols achieving low latency rely on IP multicast and fail to achieve good throughput because of message losses. In...
